The importance of cognitive skills:

Cognitive skills can mean the difference between being a
great learner, and a below-average learner.

When cognitive skills are lacking, the child can fall behind in learning because of difficulty processing and retaining new information.

Unfortunately, many struggling students are shifted into the next grade, without ever mastering the most basic academic skills like reading, writing and maths – all because their cognitive skills haven’t been properly developed first.

What is cognitive dysfunction?

Cognitive dysfunction is most commonly manifested in children and adolescents in the form of “learning disorders”. A learning disorder is defined as difficulty in an academic area (reading, mathematics or written expression). The difficulty experienced by the child is severe enough to interfere with academic achievement or age-appropriate normal activities of daily living. Learning disorders are sometimes called learning disabilities, or specific learning disabilities. Types of learning disorders include the following:

Lifestyle tips to improve your child’s concentration

Exercise

Get some exercise

Exercise increases circulation in the body, sending oxygen where it’s needed, including the brain. It also increases their energy levels, while reducing hyperactivity and stress at the same time.

Diet

Improve their diet

To give their brain the energy it needs at the start of every day, try to incorporate complex carbohydrates, along with a protein and something green.

Sleep

Give your child enough sleep

Anything from 9 to 11 hours of sleep every night, so be sure to get to bed early enough.

Water

Drink plenty of water

Just like any other organ in their body, your child’s brain needs water to work properly. So, ensure your kids get plenty of water to stay hydrated.
